600 MANITOU SPRINGS MUSTANGS (VIRTUALLY) STAMPEDING TO THE WILL ROGERS SHRINE OF THE SUN!

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo-AspenPointe “virtual” Run to the Shrine at
Manitou Springs Elementary School this Friday --

March 8, 2012, Colorado Springs, CO - The 600 elementary students in the Manitou Springs School District probably can’t run faster than a giraffe, but they aren’t going for speed this spring, they’re going for distance! In a special ceremony at Manitou Springs Elementary School at 2:00 p.m. this Friday, March 9, students along with local running legend Matt Carpenter and some Cheyenne Mountain Zoo animal ambassadors, will kick off the first-ever Cheyenne Mountain Zoo-AspenPointe virtual Run to the Shrine.

Between now and May 18, Manitou Springs Elementary (450 students) and Ute Pass Elementary (150 students) will run legs of either a 5K (grades K – 2) or 10K (grades 3 – 5) during PE classes and recess, ahead of the actual Run to the Shrine at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo on Saturday, May 19. The students will wear zoo-themed arm bands to help them track their progress over the weeks. Every student who completes the challenge will receive a ticket to get into Cheyenne Mountain Zoo free this summer, thanks to AspenPointe. AspenPointe, a local organization dedicated to promoting a culture of health and well-being, developed the virtual run idea as a fun and unique way to motivate kids to be more active.

This year’s Run to the Shrine at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is Saturday, May 19. It’s the only day of the year foot traffic is allowed on the road to the Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun, a Colorado landmark. Registration for the 5K/10K is now open online.
