Quarters for Conservation Events

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo staff is passionate about their animals and dedicated to spreading conservation initiatives. They planned these upcoming special events to help educate guests about some of this year’s featured Quarters for Conservation animals.

Big Cat Bonanza

Sun, Sept 26

10:00am – 3:00pm

Did you know Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is home to three of the world’s most endangered cats – snow leopards, Amur leopards, and Amur tigers? They’re disappearing at an alarming rate due to poaching, habitat and prey loss, and conflicts with humans. Big Cat Bonanza is a fun-filled day highlighting the amazing conservation work being done by Snow Leopard Trust (SLT) and Amur Leopard and Tiger Alliance (ALTA), which are supported by the Zoo’s Quarters for Conservation program. Megan Sanders, Animal Behaviors Program Manager at the Zoo, knows first-hand how important SLT is in Mongolia.

“While it’s first and foremost an organization dedicated to saving wild snow leopards, all of its programs operate with a central focus of doing so through supporting and improving the livelihoods of the people and communities that share snow leopard habitat. Providing these outlets allows for higher incomes and security of livelihoods, and the need to poach decreases.”

Big Cat Bonanza features cat-themed activities for kids of all ages, special animal talks and demonstrations, and educational displays. These and other Big Cat Bonanza activities will be happening in the Lodge at Moose Lake/Loft and in front of the leopard and tiger exhibits, and it’s all FREE with Zoo admission! International Penguin Awareness Day

Sat, Oct 2

10:00am – 3:00pm

Black-footed penguins and other South African coastal birds are threatened by commercial fishing, human disturbance and oils spills. That’s why the Zoo’s Quarters for Conservation program supports the South African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds’ (SANCCOB) efforts to rescue, hand raise, and release orphaned and abandoned chicks back into the wild.

Put on your weekend clothes - black tie not required for International Penguin Awareness Day at the Zoo! Special activities to help you learn more about these ground-bound birds include a feeding demonstration, oil cleaning station, and scavenger hunt. These and other International Penguin Awareness Day activities will be happening in the Aquatics building, and it’s all FREE with Zoo admission! Check the Zoo’s website for additional information: http://www.cmzoo.org/guestInformation/events/eventDetail.asp?eid=185
