Will Rogers Shrine History of the Chimes

Over time, the system of chimes at the Shrine has evolved as technology has improved and the original system aged and became to unreliable and difficult to repair.

Originally installed were a combination of Westminster Chimes, a Vipraharp and two octave Cathedral Chimes.  Remnants of those systems are still found in the chamber beside the chapel.  There were two tubular bell systems, one set for the time toll and a larger set larger set for the music that radiated from the shrine along with an old paper player similar to what
found on player pianos.

These systems are no longer in operation and were replaced with a more reliable Maas-Rowe 50 bell Symphonic Carillon.  It is
still two octaves from F to F, 50 minor and 50 major.  The bells for this system are miniature and are amplified with crystal microphones to larger amplifiers now located adjacent to the chapel and are played through a
speaker beneath the lower patio.
