Experimental Gardens
Do
you find yourself looking at the plants as you walk around the Zoo? Have
you ever wondered “what the heck is that flower?” The horticulture department
strives to test and promote unusual plants that will
grow
in our region. Perhaps you have strolled through Asian Highlands and wondered,
“Is that really a magnolia in bloom?” or “What kind of tree has cones but
loses its needles in the winter?” The answers, by the way, are “Yes,
they are magnolias and they bloom almost every spring” and “That is a European
Larch.” We also test different varieties of common plants like roses
and daylilies. We have over 30 types of
roses on Zoo grounds and over 35 types
of daylilies. In the spring of 2005, the staff planted nine new varieties
of bamboo. Stay tuned to see how well the bamboo survive our harsh dry
winters.
