Winter WildLand Puts "Festive" into the Holidays!

Take in the thousands of holiday lights from the Mountaineer Sky Ride or experience their beauty firsthand while walking through the Zoo. You’ll be delighted by the surprises that await you at the top at Santa’s Summit!

Make enrichment gifts for your favorite animals while mingling with the Grinch near the Loft. Then accompany the Grinch as he delivers your gifts to the animals. (The times and locations of the Grinch's delivery schedule are posted throughout the Zoo). At each stop, he and a zookeeper will share a story about the animal receiving the gift. What a great opportunity to learn more about your favorite animals as you watch them tear into their presents! The jolly old elf will rotate which animals receive your treats so you’ll want to come often as the experience is different each night.

What kind of yummy goodies will you be making that our critter friends will savor? Santa’s elves will help you assemble animal treats with ingredients like cereals, fruit, produce, cookie cutter bread, and food color-stenciled giraffe crackers. No worries, all ingredients have been approved by the Zoo’s animal department. At Winter WildLand you learn about exotic animal enrichment, but at home there are animals that enjoy enrichment as well. Here are some great at home enrichment ideas to download Pet Safety, I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas..., and a Dog Recepie Card.

The largest holiday light show in the region, Winter WildLand features many new light-themed clusters, color combinations, animated light sculptures and energy-saving LED lighting. Warming stations throughout the Zoo offer a reprieve from the chill, as do select indoor animal/activity areas. Animal exhibits open during the event include the African Rift Valley indoor giraffe residence where guests can feed crackers to the Zoo’s famous herd, Rocky Mountain Wild (moose, mountain lions, lynx and otters), Asian Highlands (Amur tigers and leopards), Aquatics (hippos), Monkey Pavilion and Lion’s Lair. You can also visit the Loft to meet smaller animals up close and help with stringing cranberries and popcorn. And youngsters are sure to want to stop at Santa’s thank you letter writing station in the Safari Cabin, where they can jot a special note to Santa.
