Animal Internships

Try Zookeeping on for Size.

(Ages 18 +)

Does your school or college require internships for graduation? Do you want to see if zookeeping is the career for you? Cheyenne Mountain Zoo offers internships geared for people ages 18 and older. With only one intern accepted per area, it’s a great opportunity to get individualized attention.

Dates & Times:

Eight hour shifts per day; minimum three (3) days per week.
360 hours total required.

Summer Internships begin in May and June.
Winter Internships beginning date is negotiable and should be discussed during the interview process.



  • The application for this program must be completed and submitted in advance.
  • A $100.00 non-refundable deposit is due upon acceptance.
  • Full payment is due at your scheduled orientation.


Since we approach our internships as enrollment into a learning institution, certain fees apply. This includes an Individual Plus Zoo Membership that is valid through the duration of your internship, and includes all the benefits that come with the Individual Plus Zoo Membership (e.g.: free admission to the Zoo on your days off, discounts on Zoo programs, etc.)

$35.00 Background check fee

$505.00 – Internship registration
**A discounted rate of $305.00 is applicable during our off season between September 1st and February 28th.

Please consult your career counselor at your school to inquire about receiving academic credit for your internship.


To Apply:

Although there is no guarantee for intern approval, area preference will be given to those who submit their application for the spring/summer season (April- August) by March 1st, and for the fall/winter season (September- March) by August 1st.

**Update: Rocky Mountain Wild and Wilgruen’s Elephant Barn animal areas are currently full for our Summer Season Internships. We are still searching for candidates interested in Outback Yard (for May and June start), African Rift Valley 1, African Rift Valley 2, Monkey Pavilion, Primate World (May start) and Conservation Highlands. Unless otherwise stated, all applicants accepted after 3/1/2017 will be starting their internship in June.**
