The Carousel is Getting a NEW HOME!

PLEASE NOTE: The carousel is currently CLOSED for relocation. We anticipate it will resume operation by Summer 2024. We apologize for any inconvenience.

In preparation for some other big changes at CMZoo, the carousel is moving! Its new home will be just up the hill, across from Pizza with a View. This move will also give us an opportunity to restore even more of the historic carousel horses to their former glory.

This is just one of the first steps in some big changes you’ll see around the Zoo in the coming months and years. Learn more about the big changes!

Young at Heart.

Older than most of the people who ride it, this carousel was a popular attraction at the 1933 Century of Progress Fair in Chicago, Illinois. Built circa 1926 and acquired by Spencer Penrose from the Allan Herschell Company of New York to be installed in 1937, it has become a cherished feature of Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.

As one of the few remaining structures of the “original” Zoo, this country-fair style carousel features 20 jumping horses in two rows, with two stationary chariots, and has been giving Zoo guests of all ages a twirl since 1937! This antique carousel is both on the State Register of Historic Properties and a permanent attraction at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. Learn more about this Historic Allan Herschell Carousel (PDF)
