Genus: Prunus tomentosa
Plant Type: Shrub
Hardiness Zone: Zones 3-10
Requirements: Full sun, regular water.
Zoo Location: Asian Highlands
Characteristics: Native to China and Tibet, this species grows 6 to 10 feet tall and 13 feet wide and is very cold hardy. Light pink flower buds and fragrant white flowers appear in mid April, making this one of the earliest blooming Prunus. The foliage is 1 1/2 inch long, dark green, and has silvery hairs below. In June and July half inch edible bright red fruit is produced, which is a favorite of birds. In winter, its glossy reddish brown peeling bark is of interest. This large shrub or small tree requires pruning to eliminate crossing or awkward branches, and prefers aerated and well-drained soils.
