Purple Coneflower

Genus: Echinacea purpurea

Plant Type: Perennial

Hardiness Zone: Zones 4-8

Requirements: Full sun, moderate water.

Zoo Location: No Water Garden

Characteristics: Native to central and eastern North America, Purple Coneflower is one of a handful of prairie plants that have successfully 'jumped the fence' into cultivated gardens. Clumps of 3 to 4 inch oblong dark green leaves give rise to 4 foot stalks with diminished foliage and capped with 4 inch flowers with purple-pink petals and large orange-brown central cones which are shaped like beehives. Purple Coneflower blooms from early summer to fall, and is tolerant of hot sunny areas and average to heavy soils. Although it needs little supplemental water to survive, flower production is much improved with some additional water.
