Rocky Mountain Penstemon

Genus: Penstemon strictus

Plant Type: Perennial

Hardiness Zone: Zones 3-7

Requirements: Full sun, moderate or no water.

Zoo Location: No Water Garden

Characteristics: This Rocky Mountain native grows 2 to 3 feet tall and 2 feet wide. In early summer flower stalks arise from a basal rosette of foliage. Foliage dininishes in size along the stalk, and stalks are topped with 3/4 inch to 1 1/2 inch clusters of violet to bluish-purple flowers shaped like narrow bells with flared tips. With the onset of cold fall weather the basal foliage turns from dark green to almost purple, and persists throughout the winter. Rocky Mountain Penstemon requires fast draining soil and little to no supplemental water.
