Characteristics: Native to the mountains of Europe, this narrowly pyramidal deciduous conifer grows 10 to 25 feet wide and to over 60 feet tall. Pale green tufts of new needles in spring become soft, grass green foliage in summer, and develop a brilliant yellow and orange in the fall before dropping. In spring, bright purple-red new cones develop into 1 to 1 1/2 inch woody cones in the fall, and persist over winter. This tree is not fussy about soil and has a moderate to fast growth rate.
