Missouri Primrose

Genus: Oenothera macrocarpa

Plant Type: Perennial

Hardiness Zone: Zones 3-8

Requirements: Full sun or part shade, little or moderate water.

Zoo Location: Rocky Mountain Goats

Characteristics: Native to the south central United States, this perennial makes a great rock garden plant due to its low growth habit and its ability to succeed in the toughest conditions. This Primrose grows 6 to 8 inches tall and 2 feet wide, and has 3 inch lance-shaped foliage and 4 inch pure yellow flowers which remain open all day. Plants bloom from late spring to early fall, when the flowers give way to 3 inch seed pods with papery wings. This tough, drought tolerant plant prefers normal well drained soil, full sun to light shade, and requires little maintenance.
