IUCN Status: Least Concern

Found over an enormous area in the southwestern United States and part of Mexico, chuckwallas prefer rocky areas and hillsides at the edge of deserts and avoid flat, sandy areas. They spend most of their time basking in the sun on boulders until their body temperature reaches 100 degrees Fahrenheit. When threatened they will retreat into rocky crevices and inflate their bodies like balloons.
