ZOO LOCATION: Australia Walkabout

Lifespan: 10 to 25 years

Wild Diet: Seeds

Habitat: Native to Australia, favoring the Australian wetlands, scrub lands and bush lands.

IUCN Status: Least Concern

Characteristics: One of the smallest and most widespread species of cockatoo. The cockatiel's distinctive crest (feathers on top of its head) expresses the animal's emotional state. The crest is vertical when the cockatiel is startled or excited, neutral in a relaxed state, and flattened close to the head when angry or defensive. The crest is also held flat but protrudes outward int eh back when the cockatiel is trying to attract a mate.

Behavior: Cockatiels are better at whistling than they are at talking! In fact, some extra-talented cockatiels can whistle entire songs.
