Characteristics: Native to central United States, this coarsely branched upright oval tree grows 40 to 60 feet tall and 20 to 40 feet wide and seldom develops a dominant central trunk without pruning when young. In spring, custers of 2 inch fragrant white trumpet-shaped flowers bloom at the end of last years branches. As flowering ends, large 6 to 12 inch light green heart-shaped foliage emerges. Throughout summer long green, bean-shaped seed pods develop, turn dark brown, and remain through winter. This tree has no significant fall color, but is well adapted to extreme heat and cold, and has a moderate to fast growth rate.
