Naked Mole Rat

Diet: Plant tubers, roots and bulbs.

Habitat/Range: Underground tunnels in dry savannahs on the horn of Africa.

Characteristics: Since they live underground, naked mole rats have tiny eyes and poor eyesight. They live in extensive burrows and sleep in piles to keep warm.

Behavior: This unusual rodent has a social structure similar to bees. The queen can have up to five litters per year and as many as 27 pups per litter! The rest of the colony is responsible for defense, digging, carrying food and other tasks.
